I can receive but can't send email

This article provides the answer to the classic question: "I can receive email, but I can't send email". It is very likely that the ISP that you're using is blocking email ports in an attempt to combat spam. This articles provides some pointers how to find a workaround.

Can't Send Email?

If you can't send email - the cause of this problem likely relates to restrictions put in place by many ISPs (such as Bigpond, Optus, iPrimus, iiNet, and others), who are trying to prevent spam from being launched from within their own network, by restricting E-mail to their own local network.

Can't Send Email? These restrictions have been in force by many ISPs for several months now, however because the ISP's networks are quite large, they perform these upgrades in stages, meaning that your neighbour who uses the same ISP might have been affected months ago, but you might have only recently been affected if another stage of the restrictions was implemented.

Can't Send Email? This problem of not being able to send email can be resolved by changing your Outgoing Email Server to your ISP's mail server.

Known ISP's affected, and their associated outgoing/SMTP mail servers are as follows:

  • Telstra Bigpond Mail Server : mail.bigpond.com
  • iPrimus / Primus Telecom Mail Server : smtp.iprimus.com.au
  • Optus / OptusNet Mail Server : mail.optusnet.com.au
  • iiNet Mail Server : mail.m.iinet.net.au
  • Dodo Mail Server: smtp.dodo.com.au
  • Westnet Mail Server: mail.westnet.com.au
  • Hotmail: smtp.live.com
** If your ISP is not listed, please refer to their support site, or call them to find out the outgoing server.

If you have problems changing your outgoing email-server settings, or you aren't sure what your outgoing ISP's email server settings are, please contact your Internet Service Provider.
